The most popular genre from looking at the table is pop. Pop music is generally music that is most popular in todays culture as it can come in many forms. The second most popular is the RNB genre. Some of the songs contain subgenres as there is more than one artist involved. The artists in the charts from the RNB genre are rudimental, Flo Rida, Nicki Minaj, Wiley, Rhianna, Larbinth, Emelie Sande.

Market Research

Front Covers

I found 3 front covers: XXL, the source and vibe. On source the colour scheme links with the artists clothing and the props on the front cover. Source and XXL don’t have much writing on their front covers; mainly they only talk about the cover stories in the magazine. On vibe and XXL they have used a direct gaze, they chose to pose the artist like this to intimidate the audience. The reason for this is to grab their attention and again to represent the RNB genre as touch, scary and intimating. They try and make the celebrity’s as outlaws to the music industry. The positioning of the image on all of the magazines has been placed in front of the masthead. On source and XXL they use close up shots rather than long shots. On all 3 of the magazines the celebrity’s name on the front cover stands out to the rest of the writing.
Contents Page

For all three of the contents 2 of them only contain one image but the XXL one contains two. This suggests that my contents page needs to be simple and only focus on the artist. Top Billin' and XXL both include the date when the issue was released on their page. For each photo on the contents page they include photo credit to the photographers, none of the images are close ups which suggests my image for my contents page should be a mid-shot or full body shot. None of the celebrities are smiling and most of the poses are serious, as they are representing there persona as being tough. Suggesting that this is the representation we get from the RNB genre. The colour schemes of the contents page are always dark colours like blacks/whites/greys yet in 2 of them they have a bright colour which makes certain words stand out like the cover story and the artist.

Double Page Spreads

The image on all over the double page spread doesn’t engage with the audience as it uses an indirect gaze. They’ve done that to make you feel exclusive to looking into a celebrity’s lifestyle. On two of the double page spreads there is a quote from the artists to do with the article. On all of them some reference has been made to the magazine name. The articles on Lupe fiasco and Rick Ross all have a headline to the article. For the fonts they only stick to no more the two colour schemes to keep it easier to read. Two of the images are mid shots whereas the other one is a long shot of the artist, Usher and Rick Ross both have props in their image. On all of the double page spreads some of the words have been emphasised with colours, or the bold tool to make them stand out and show the main references to the article.

Double Page Spread Analysis

The main language convention this double page spread follows is that the main text at the top is made with different sized fonts. The biggest font used was on ‘absolutely’ which is done to put emphasis on the word, it is also done in bold to make it stronger. The colours stick to a strict colour scheme of grey, black, white and pink. The pink is used in the bigger part of the text on certain words, this makes the white drained out and the pink linking the main words to what the article is about. It is creating a variety on the page which makes it look more interesting to read. The subheadings and the main text at the top of the page are in front of the squared shape which makes them more prominent and stand out overall on the page. For the subheadings it also shows a clear differentiation between each question, and what the text underneath them is going to be about and feature. The article is to the right hand side of the page and main shot is on the left, to show he is as dominant as the article itself. The picture links with a genre that the magazine tries to portray, this magazine being about rock. We can tell from this image by his stereotypical dress sense being casual and the tattoos on his arms which denote rebellion. Also his gelled spikey hair makes him look rebellious. To the bottom left of the photo there is a caption which links to the photo. At the top left hand corner it also includes the website, this is a typical convention as after reading this article the reader may want more and with this at the top they’ll know where to look.

Preliminary Task- Evaluation on my final product

Evaluation
In my media magazine the stories I put on the front page followed typical conventions as they all associated with typical stories you would expect to see in a college magazine. Under the masthead it also has a website to the college and the issue and date of the magazine release. This makes it look professional and shows that it is a weekly magazine. I also changed the colour of some words to differentiate between stories and used capital letters to make them stand out. Conventional magazines do this to emphasise big articles. I didn't follow a conventional front cover photo because I blended two photos together to represent the college as having many perspectives.

My work shows it is aimed at stereotypical hard working students. The stories on the magazine represent this by the article being based on ways you can achieve in the college. You can also know that it is of a teenage age group as the article on UCAS points aren't being aimed to people who are hoping to get into university. The model on the front cover also shows it’s an age group as she has been placed on here because students will be able to relate to her as they have the same role and status within the college.

My main way of targeting my audience is by the offer on the front cover. For college students they will have been told to purchase books to go towards their classes and with not many of them having a job it may be hard to afford it all. This way the student can use the offer on the front. My cover also encouraged people to take part within the college on the debate team. The story on ‘what is acceptable to wear at college?’ This way the college is trying to get people involved and make them feel part of the sixth form.

To design my magazine I used Photoshop. With this technology I changed the colour settings of my picture and I also made them overlap with the opaque tool. The main tool I used on this programme was the text tool, to add writing to my magazine. I duplicated the layer when doing this so I could add a shadow to the articles and the masthead to make them stand out. I also used the quick selection tool at the beginning of my magazine cover so I could copy part of the layer to cover a letter on the masthead, this way it would follow conventional magazines as a lot use this technique. Unfortunately I changed my design so I had to get rid of this.

Preliminary Task- Final Front cover and Mock Up Of Contents

 My Final Product

Preliminary Task- Drafts Of Front Cover

Plan of my front cover.

Preliminary Task- Original Images

The other images I took for my magazine.

Preliminary Tasks- Initial Ideas

I gathered all my ideas together so I could make a final decision.

Preliminary task- Camera Angle Shots

I experimented with lots of camera angle shots so i could tell which was which.

Preliminary Task- Mood Board

I created the mood board to help create ideas for my magazine.

Preliminary Task- LIIAR Contents Analysis

L- The colours of the font on the contents page contrast. The white connotes purity innocence and virginity whereas the black connotes power and evil. This could be representing the magazine to having two sides; it also could link with the shot of the model creating a v with her legs. This could be symbolizing the symbol of the magazine ‘vibe’ or again link with the font of her making the ‘v’ to stand for virginity yet how she is doing it is done in a sexual manner with her legs out, with her legs being the main focus of the image. The contents titles are in italics which represent elegance.

I-Vibe is a large growing industry, which was bought by InterMedia Partners. (Publishers running it now) ‘Vibe also publishes books on hip-hop culture’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibe_(magazine)

I- The ideology of this picture creates the message of sex, from the half-naked girl on the page, the girl creates a direct gaze with the audience. It could be seen as hypnotizing with the audience and show that the music that is created could be hypnotizing. The values it represents is elegance being sexy.

A- ‘VIBE serves as a portal to a growing young, trendsetting, multicultural audience. The VIBE audience is comprised of trendsetting individuals passionate about music, entertainment, fashion and popculture.’  http://www.vibelifestylenetwork.com/VLN-Media-Kit-2012.pdf

R- The artist on the cover is represented half naked; this represents her desire for love and represents her being sexy. It also represents what the music is about being love and sex. It is showing that the audience appeal is aimed at men as they are using the woman as an object of reference to them. Yet the model is still seen glamorous from her jewelry. The italics of the font could also link witch the model being sleek, elegant and sexy.

Preliminary Task- LIIAR Cover Analysis

LIIAR analysis
L- The image on this magazine is a posed close up. The celebrity is giving the shot a direct gaze but the glasses are hiding away his eyes to show he could be hiding something. It could also suggest his personality is laid back and shows his superior because sunglasses connote class and could suggest he is so high up that he can wear glasses inside. The main shot is focused on his ring which associates with the article on his marriage. The masthead is behind the model which also shows he is really important to the magazine, he is also the main article in there magazine. The font is bold and blue, so it emphasises, the less important articles are also in this colour so it fits in with the layout. The more important articles however are done if different colours. One is done is yellow which is bright and stands out of the full page. Another way the editors have made the font is by using capital letters which could represent the magazine to be an in your face magazine. The term swagger is a different colour and font so it emphasises the word that is different, it is an exception maybe symbolising the singer is an exception. Sunglasses also connote swag.

I-Vibe is a large growing industry, which was bought by InterMedia Partners. (Publishers running it now) ‘Vibe also publishes books on hip-hop culture’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibe_(magazine)

I- The ideology this magazine is trying to portray is rebellion and swag through the music industry. It shows stereotypical values of a celebrity rapper covered in bling and shades. It also conveys that the type of music and stories they choose to talk about are mostly sex due to the multiple use of the word.  Mainly talks about the celebrity’s sex and love life also. So the target audience it will be aimed at will be celebrity gossip and music lovers. Target audience shows it is aimed at a young age of 50 and under.

A-‘VIBE serves as a portal to a growing young, trendsetting, multicultural audience. The VIBE audience is comprised of trendsetting individuals passionate about music, entertainment, fashion and popculture.’ http://www.vibelifestylenetwork.com/VLN-Media-Kit-2012.pdf

R- The representation of the singer is seen as rebellious which links to the article about his divorce he is putting one of his middle fingers up which could also be representing his marriage. The articles used a strong word ‘vengeance’ which has bad connotations which could represent the singer being classed as a ‘bad boy’ to the hip hop industry. The magazine has also written a lot about sex which could represent the singer being back on the market ready for more sex. The music genre for the magazine represents gangster boys who created a messy persona for themselves and at the top of the magazine it laughs a fresh clean boy bands and calls them immature, could represent the music genre as violent and mocking.

Contents Page Analysis

This is my analysis of the cosmopolitan content page, which is done in the same way as the cover. I did this so when I make my contents page I can follow conventional guidelines.
